About Me.

Artist career

ARTIST CV – FEB 2024  - David Solomon Art

I am a sculptor who works mainly with clay, creating abstract and contemporary ceramic pieces. I use hand-building techniques to make non-functional forms that sometimes incorporate other materials, such as glass, wood, marble, plastic, iron, wire, copper and stone.

I also make ceramic tiles that can be hung on walls with mixed media.

My designs are constantly evolving to reflect the changing society in urban and rural contexts. I draw inspiration from modernism, post-modernism, architecture, interior design and nature.

My artwork also expresses my views on social issues and world affairs that matter to me, as well as the faith that I bring into my art.

My art forms vary in style and mood. Some are cutting-edge, modern and erratic, with slabs protruding from the shapes and mixed media in the clay. They are full of energy, life and colour or lack thereof.

Others are more free-flowing, rounded and calm, with a classical, contemporary or homeware look. They may have colour or not.

I create my work spontaneously or with a plan. I am still influenced at times by my country of origin, South Africa, in terms of form, colour and design. I have also been influenced by Sydney and Australia, where I live now, especially by the vastness of the countryside.

I use a variety of glazes, including bright colours, earthy tones, raku and underglazes.

The size of my artwork ranges from 6 cm to over a metre high. I sell my work at galleries, privately and through commissions.

I started working with clay at the age of 14 to relax. I studied ceramics for HSC and obtained a three-year diploma in Ceramic Art majoring in Expressive Vesselism and Sculpture in the evenings. I have been exhibiting professionally since 1992, in group shows every year and in three solo shows. The last one was in 2018. I have won an international award.
